A Study Of Intertextuality In Network News Headlines-from The Perspective Of Memetics

With the rapid development of communication means,the speed to disseminate and exchange information is far beyond people’s imagination.Against this background,network news thus emerges and becomes an important source to get information.But due to the layout characteristics of it,that is,the separation of headline and body,net citizens are more inclined to browse headlines first,which undoubtedly attaches great importance to network news headlines.And intertextuality is one of the main features of network news headlines.The concept of intertextuality means that any text is the absorption and transformation of another.Memetics is a new theory which aims to explain cultural evolution.Chinese scholar Xu Chenghuan analyzes intertextuality of literary works from the perspective of memetics and proves the explanatory power of memetics to intertextuality.However,by inquiring into the journals and theses at home and abroad,the author has found that study on intertextuality in network news headlines from the perspective of memetics is still rare.The previous research on network news headlines mainly focuses on the language features and the comparison between newspaper headlines and network news headlines,using rhetoric and translatology as the main research methods.The study of network news headlines is seldom put in the dynamic language environment.This thesis takes the theory of memetics as theoretical framework and analyzes network news headlines’ intertextuality from the perspective of memetics.Firstly,it overviews the previous study on intertextuality and network news headlines.Furthermore,it analyses the relationship between intertextuality and memetics as well as the manifestation of intertextuality in network news headlines from the perspective of memetics.And based on the above two,it then explores the deep mechanism behind the formation of intertextuality.The research shows that intertextuality is an effective means of achieving the dissemination of network news headlines and the transmission of memes is the prerequisite for the formation of intertextuality.Furthermore,the means of intertextuality used in network news headlines include quotation,allusion,parody and pun,which can attract readers and help them interpret the information.At last,strong memes are more conducive to the realization of intertextuality and thus accelerate the spread of network news headlines.This thesis is expected to offer effective guidance for headline editors,help news readers decode the information embodied in the headline and provide reference for further study of intertextuality in non-literary text from the perspective of memetics.
