A Study On The Theme Of "Memory" In Modiano's Novel

Patrick Modiano(1945-),is considered as one of the most talented writers by the French critics.His works often reflect the social history of France through individual memories,so as to unfold the philosophical thinking of the depth.This article takes the Modiano L'Herbe des nuits,Villa Triste and Dimanches d'ao?t and other works as the research object,focusing on the "memory" theme of the works.And based on the in-depth reading the novels,the paper takes "memory" specific content and production methods as the main entrance,and analyzes the "memory" behind the underlying warning meaning.For the “memory” theme of Modiano's works,in terms of its content,they often showing the expansion and extension characteristics: from the memory of individual's daily life to the social and cultural of the group,it closely links the memory oblivion with cultural preservation.In terms of its characterization,Modiano has gone through his memory of body and time and space to express his characterization process,he illustrates the meaning of memory from these three aspects,which is not only the recognition or recalling the object or the event itself,but is more of a grasp and reconstruction of the relationship between things.In the work,the author explores the lack of belonging,the reconstruction of identity and the confusion of memory.The content involves the perception of memory,the processing and extraction of experience and information,which are aimed at reflecting the phenomenon of memory anxiety of modern people,and advocating people to assume the responsibility of memory.This paper argues that the description of ”memory” in the works of Modiano is about the self-identity process of from forgetting “memory” passively to seeking for“memory” positively.Although the author is obsessed with depicting the past events,its real goal is to live to the moment and to look to the future.The author is helped by the fictional world of the text to allude to the real world of modern life.Nowadays,People are busy with running around in life and ignore the past and also neglect to plan their future.For such a living situation,Modiano expresses his serious concern to remind the modern people of assuming the responsibility of “memory”,and to grasp the moment to embrace the future.
