Caravaggio is one of the leading post-Renaissance painters in the 16th and 17th centuries.His painting style exerts great influence upon almost all of European painters after him.The book Caravaggio is a biography named after this Italian painter.Biography helps transmit culture.The translation of biographical texts offers a bridge of intercultural communication.Therefore,the translation of the book is expected to be helpful for those Caravaggio enthusiasts.And hopefully,this report could be a reference for the translation of biographical texts.The translation report is a collaborative effort of the professor,classmates and the translator.It is based on the translation practice of several chapters of the book.Under the guidance of the semantic translation and the communicative translation of Peter Newmark,the translator intends to analyze and solve the challenges in the translation practice and summarize experiences at the end of the report.This translation report is based on the translation of Caravaggio.The translator gives an introduction to the project background,the significance of the report and the organization of the report,makes an analysis of the contents and stylistic features of the book and illustrates the translation process.The case analysis is made under the guidance of Peter Newmark's translation approaches on two levels.Semantic translation deals with the translation of words and phrases based on religious culture,aesthetic knowledge and the context.Communicative translation is mainly used to handle the translation of sentences with techniques of division,reformulation and amplification.Moreover,the translator summarizes the experiences in this translation practice.
