| The material used in this paper is excerpted from the conference reports of MEPC 68/3,MEPC 68/3/1,MEPC 68/3/2 and MEPC 68/3/3,which on the basis of the main item "air pollution and energy efficiency",discuss the matters of Ozone-Depleting Substances,progress report of the Ad Hoc expert working group on facilitation of transfer of technology for ships,sulphur monitoring for 2014 and report of the correspondence group on the availability of fuel oil.Based on the ten thousand words of translation material,this report analyzes the problems in the adverbial clauses translation in Maritime English text,including the different position of adverbial parts,the existence of conjunction in English adverbial clauses,the complicated sentence structure and the elliptical phenomenon between English and Chinese maritime texts.Furthermore,this report studies and summarizes the translation techniques and strategies of adverbial clauses in maritime English text.The frequently-appeared adverbial clauses in maritime English texts are adverbial clause of time,reason and condition,so their translation strategies are especially analyzed in this report.The four translation strategies are the change of sentence order,conversion,division and combination.The change of sentence order refers to change the position of the adverbial clause and the main sentence in translation.Aimed at improving the logicality and uniformity of translation,conversion is used to transform the type of adverbial clause in the source language into another one in the target language.Division is used to divide up the whole sentence and make the adverbial clause an individual sentence in translation.When there are repeated components between the main clause and the adverbial clause,combination should be used to put them together and make them into one sentence.Finally,based on the respective and joint use of the four translation strategies,this report makes a conclusion of the translation achievements of adverbial clauses in maritime texts from English to Chinese.In so doing,this report serves as a starting-pointing in the translation of adverbial clauses in maritime English texts. |
