With the development of science and technology,the world has entered the information era.Formal school instruction is not enough for learners to adapt to quickly changing circumstances.People need to have life-long learning ability to survive in the information era.The Chinese English learners are not satisfied with the exam-oriented teaching model.Therefore,based on the related theory of autonomous learning,this thesis attempts to make an experiment to test the effect of humanistic teaching method upon the learner's autonomy by quantitative and qualitative analysis.Based on the Humanistic Teaching Theory,the research is to be made by an experiment.The subjects in this experiment are the non-English freshmen of Huaiyin Normal University.They are divided into experiment class(E Class)and control class(C Class).Firstly,two questionnaires and interviews are designed to investigate the state of the subjects'previous English learning autonomy.Then,this paper explores the ways to apply humanistic teaching method into college English teaching.Last but not least,the data collected by the tests is used to make the comparison between the experiment class and the control class to explore the effect of the humanistic teaching on learners' autonomy.According to the interviews and the data collected by the questionnaires,the participants are not satisfied with the exam-oriented teaching model.In the senior high school,the students have low learning autonomy.In the research,the researcher makes an experiment based on the humanistic teaching theory.The class is created as the relaxing and learner-centered learning environment in experiment class,in which the students are greatly motivated and become confident in English learning.The participants in the experiment class are autonomous to study and their scores of the final test are much higher than the ones of the control class.Based on the results of the experiment,the conclusion can be drawn that the humanistic teaching method is effective to foster the English learners' autonomy.This study confirms and develops relevant language teaching theories and provides some theoretical references for English teaching and English learners.
