Chen Yan is one of the Fujian poets in late Qing Dynasty and the Early Years of the Republic of China. His Ci-poetry is almost a new research field. At present, there is no monograph on discussion of Chen Yan's Ci-poetry. Only to broaden the study of Fujian Ci and enrich the content of the history of Ci, the paper use the methods of comparative literature and reception aesthetics. Chen Yan's theory of Ci-poetry is divided into two categories. One is the Ci literature that focuses on bibliography. It contributes to arrangement and preservation of Fujian Ci. Second is the criticism of Ci. He use the methods of comparative criticism, criticism of sentences and origin criticism to discuss the style, history, creation and appreciation of Ci. The formation of Chen Yan's thought of Ci has the color of "Changzhou Ci school". It touches on hot topics in the history of Ci criticism. It is dialectical and comprehensive that Chen Yan comments on Su Shi, Xin Qiji and Wu Wenying's Ci, "Zong in the Northern Song Dynasty" opinion, "obscuration" "internal meaning covered by external language" and "saoya".It embodies the forbearance and can correct the accepted theory of the history of Ci. The pursuit of "truth" is a thread of Chen Yan's Ci-poetry. It can cure Ci abuses. But limited by the time and their own understanding, he failed to break the two factions of the cage of School of Zhexi Ci and Changzhou School of Ci and lack of innovation. The number of Chen Yan's Ci is not much. Influenced by personal experience, it mostly reflects the mood that has left home. It reflects the scholar's identity that use of a variety of artistic. It is particularly prominent that compatible the Ci of Southern and Northern Song Dynasty and Qing and the selection of the ru rhyme. Chen Yan's Ci and poetry has some differences as well as similarities. In an evaluation, poems are on much better than words.
