A Study Of Yang Zhouhan’s Version Of The Adventures Of Roderick Random From The Perspective Of Translated Literature

Tobias George Smollett was an eminent prolific writer in English literature in the eighteenth century,whose renown was brought to the world by The Adventures of Roderick Random.This novel,taking Smollett as its prototype,vividly depicted the panorama of the British society of the eighteenth century by recounting various tortures Roderick Random went through,which exposed deeply a series of dark aspects,including the cruelty of colonial wars,the corruption of parliament,the decay of the government and the incompetence of the officials,with poignant sarcasm and humorous language.Such a work was honored as one of the "Daily Telegraph 100 Best Novels"(Bouce xv)in 1899 and was translated into Chinese as《蓝登传》by the translator Yang Zhouhan in 1961.However,due to the influences of the cultural ideology and social context then,the publication of《蓝登传》did not produce waves of debates or strong repercussion at that time.With regard to the research about this translated work,there were a few scholars who had attempted to develop their researches on it.However,almost all of these researches were developed under literature vision but nobody ever tried to explore this translated work in light of translation,especially from the perspective of translated literature to identify its independent artistic values as well as the peculiar contributions the translator made to the world in《蓝登传》.This thesis adopted the perspective of translated literature and treated《蓝登传》as an independent literary work,which expanded the research scope of translation from the concrete translation issues on linguistic level in the process of translating to the translation issues on linguistic level,social level and cultural level before translating,in the process of translating and after translating,by which the author could make comprehensive exploration about writers(author and translator),works(original work and translated work)and the event(the influence of translation as well as its reception in China).Under the guidance of such a train of thought,the whole thesis is divided into five parts.Chapter One mainly discussed the research background,the significance of the study and the structure of the thesis.Chapter Two mainly illustrated the current research situation about Yang Zhouhan’s translation achievements and introduced the definition and the research perspective of translated literature.Chapter Three is one of the main parts of the thesis,where the author concretely illustrated the performance of Yang’s subjectivity in《蓝登传》in selecting the original work,in the lucubration of the original work before translating as well as the recreation of Yang Zhouhan in the process of translating.Chapter Four mainly focused on the reception of《蓝登传》in China in different periods and the status of《蓝登传》in Chinese literature.Chapter Five mainly reiterated the significance of the study.Besides,the author also pointed out the limitation of this study as well as her research ideas about this work and this research perspective in the future.After the discussion above,the author tries to identify the new status of《蓝登传》in the history of Chinese translated literature as an independent literary work.
