Under the circumstances that many foreign students in China lack of the skills of proper greeting, parting and small talks, this study aims to explore a more effective and efficient way of teaching phatic communion to foreign students by a contrastive study of phatic communion in Chinese and English.This study consists of five chapters. Chapter one is the literature review of phatic communion studies and the introduction of this study. Chapter two is the opinions including the author's opinion about the definition of the phatic communion. Chapter three is the contrastive study of the Chinese and English phatic communion which is based on the phatic communion conversations from four popular Chinese and English TV shows. And it has concluded the differences of English and Chinese phatic communion on forms, contents and communicative strategies. Chapter four is the research on several Chinese textbooks to get a fair knowledge of the design of the phatic communion teaching. Hence it's given some advice on the phatic communion teaching in the aid of the findings of the contrastive study above. Chapter five is the conclusion of the study.This study has innovatively contrasted Chinese and English phatic communion, both of which are gathered from popular TV shows in methods of constrasive pragmatics. Not only has it concluded the differences between Chinese and English phatic communion, but also drawn a panorama of the active phatic communion in Chinese language at the time being. Based on these findings, it made some proposals about the Chinese phatic communion teaching correspondingly: To highlight the features of the Chinese phatic communion in the textbooks; To think from the aspect of the learners as one teaches Chinese phatic communion.
