China, a multi-ethnic country, has witnessed about 5000 years of civilization, which is also the reflection of mutual absorption among different ethnic minorities in history. Since ancient times, the creation of art about ethnic minorities has been a shining star in the history of Chinese art. Even in modern times, the folk customs and the history of remote regions is still an important source of art creation because of their unique character, and the Miao minority can be taken as a typical example thanks for its great number of branches and the rich folk culture. The unique way of life in Miao minority district has arisen the artists' inspiration, leading them enter the mysterious and beautiful place to experience the life in deep mountains. By describing their physical characteristics and their daily life, it is not difficult to reveal their inner soul and cultural connotation of different branches of the Miao minority. The history and culture, as well as their folk art tradition has not only become the resources of creation, but has a great impact on the development and innovation of Chinese painting, therefore, it is of great value to conduct the research on the theme of Miao minority from the perspective of art.In this paper, the introduction part is about the overall summary of the reasons for selecting this topic and the significance of the research, including the analysis of the present research status. Chapter One analyzed the related research in history and some works of art concerned based on the former Chinese ethnic minority art creation. In this part, two types of researches are brought up — the narrative art to tribute to the ruling class and the historical art of describing specific history and culture. In addition, this paper also explores the creation forms of minorities and its development tendency in order to analyze the art creation of Miao minority under a whole framework. The second chapter analyzes the historical change of image and customs from the perspective of image, which is clued by the research of Miao minority. Besides, this chapter also makes some comparisons among different times of the creation theme of Miao from the following aspects of physical characteristics and the technique of expression, for the purpose of piking out the differences between Miao minority and other forms of art in research theme, and then it is can be easy to find out the present status of Miao minority research as well as the possible problems. The third chapter summarizes the feelings and experience of my own creation from an empirical point of view. This paper argues that there are a variety of ethnic minority culture and art resources in China. As artists of today, especially as the Miao students, we have a great responsibility to explore and make good use of these resources, to show the world our colorful national culture, the Miao people's happiness and the Miao people's pure inner.
