| This report is based on the interpreter’s genuine interpreting work forthe Israeli Business Delegation during their visits to Beijing in July and August 2015. Cases and examples in this report arebased on two events, MWC(Mobile World Congress) road-show at the headquarters of Founder Group and China Telecom on 13 July and China-Israel Architectural Seminar at Westin Hotel on 25 August. Hired by theIsrael Embassy in Beijing, with Yunchi Translation, a language service provider under the administration of Beijing Service Bureau for Foreign Officials as the intermediary, the author worked as interpreter for two Israeli CEOs on two different occasions, which involve consecutive interpreting, sight interpreting and whispering interpreting. As typical business scenarios that take the forms of talk, negotiation and open presentation, the two events providesufficientand typical materials for a business-related speech analysis.This report consists of four chapters.Chapter One first defines business liaison interpretation and then proceeds to offer basic information to demonstrate what is required of the interpreter to accomplish the task. Client profile is given for the vitality of client’s appraisal in the task assessment.Chapter Two is a chronicle of the whole process, unfolding a timeline of how the task was performed, which involves work done before, during and after the interpreting service.Chapter Threemakes further analysis on the practical tactics for business-related liaison interpreting, including:(1) Amplification,(2) Omission,(3) Inversion and(4) Non-verbal tactics. Examples are drawn from the actual transcript to support the illustration.Chapter Four, is conclusion which involves three sections: client’s appraisal, self-assessment and lessons learnt. It examines the pros and cons of the interpreter’s performance and based on that, summarizes a list of tips for business interpreters. Business liaison interpreter should keep fromirrelevant information and convey factual message in a concise and clear wayto assistbusiness communication. Besides, business liaison interpreter should seek effective ways to respond when encountering blankness, slip of tongues or comprehension problems. |
