Let the Great World Spin is a great work of 9/11 by the Irish author Colum McCann. Let the Great World Spin is threaded by the event of a Frenchman Philippe Petit's walking between the towers of the World Trade Center, and this event links characters from different communities and classes. In spatial structure, walking on the wire brings seemingly unrelated stories together and connects them with countless ties. In time structure, it connects past and present for its foretell of the 9·11 attack. Let the Great World Spin explores the most anonymous emotional corners of New Yorkers with its heat-seizing plot, unfolding their great grief and loss after the violence attack. When New Yorkers are unable to face their grief and loss alone, they express the eagerness for communication and then generally head for self-reconciliation in many ways. This thesis will apply for the methods of ethical literary criticism to explore the humanistic care and moral instructions the author delivered, and through an intensive reading of the novel to unfold the ethical desire of average New Yorkers. In consideration of this, this thesis will reflect on ways of how to avoid downfall and corruption, and how to get rid of the vicious cycle of "teeth for teeth, eyes for eyes", and then how to hold balance on the relations between person and person as well as the relations between people and themselves. In present society with diverse cultures and frequently-happened violence, the enlightenments this book brings to us will help to model a harmonious society and even a harmonious world.
