Idioms are an important part of language, and are a kind of refining and sublimation of native language in the long-term labor life. With the rapid development of economic society, the contact between countries is increasingly strengthened, where idioms play an important role. Therefore, understanding idioms becomes the important factors that affect intercultural communication. Whether people can correctly understand the connotation of idioms directly influences the communication among people from different countries.Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung is an important anthology embodying the thoughts of Mao Zedong, in which there are a lot of idioms enriched the Chinese culture. How to translate these idioms into English faithfully and accurately in the process of English translating Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung is a big problem, and at the same time how to faithfully and smoothly translate the essence of the Chinese into English, and to make the target language readers accept the English version of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung is the most important and the most challenging tasks in the process of translation from Chinese into English.Reception Aesthetics, rising in the 1960 s, is a methodology in the study of western contemporary literature. A major breakthrough of Reception Aesthetics establishes the central position of the readers, considering that the readers are not passive recipients, but the active founder of literary history. According to the view of Reception Aesthetics, reading the translation is not the process that the translators and the translation unilaterally convey the image and meaning of the source text to the readers, and that the readers passively accept, but the process that the readers take an active part in, and form the dialectical relations of dialogue with translation and the translators. In this paper, from the readers' role and status, the horizon of expectation and the indeterminacy, the author analyzes the application of Reception Aesthetics in idiom translation of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung, and discusses the translation methods adopted in the process of the idiom translation, and draws the conclusion: from the perspective of Reception Aesthetics, it is feasible and successful to study the English translation of idioms of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung. All examples of the paper are taken from the English version published by Beijing Foreign Languages Press in 1960 s.This paper is made up of five parts.Part ? is introduction, which gives a brief account of the study, including the significance and originality of the study.Part ? is literature review, which introduces the translation studies based on Reception Aesthetics in home and abroad and the English translation studies of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung in home and abroad and then points out the deficiency in previous studies.Part ? is the theoretical basis of the study, which gives a general introduction to Reception Aesthetics and elaborates the three important notions-- "the status and role of the readers", "horizon of expectation", and "indeterminacy".Part ? is mainly about the studies of the English translation of idioms of Selected Works of Mao Tse-tung from "the status and role of the readers", "horizon of expectations", and "indeterminacy". These three aspects analysis and discuss the application of Reception Aesthetics in the idiom translation and the translation methods in the process of the English translation of idioms.Part ? is conclusion.
