Analysis Of The Image Of Jia Huan In The View Of “The Other”

From the view of “the Other”, the dissertation aims at the contradictory and interrelated transformation in the interactive relationship between the Subject and “the Other”, presents the Other's complexity and diversity. Jia Huan is one of the typical image of “the Other” in Red Mansions, he and Jia Baoyu from morphology, intelligence to act are very different, the opposition and conflict between beauty and ugliness implies the tension of contradiction. In the specific writing, the author mainly adopts the methods of close reading and contrast analysis to show Jia Huan's image in detail, points that the Other's image of Jia Huan has multiple connotations: in contrast with Jia Baoyu, he is “the Other” of foil, and “the Other” of bastardy; while in relationship with other family members, he is “the Other” who is hated, and “the Other” of the edge. On the surface of the roof of the image of “the Other” is the feudal system makes individuals opposite, then the Otherness is depressed by the Subject,while the core roof is the Subject of Discourse and Power shapes and restrains every individual, therefore even as a subject Jia Baoyu also inevitably feel pain and suppression for his otherness cannot be identified by the Subject of Discourse and Power. However, Jia Yingchun, Jia Tanchun, Jia Xichun and Jia Huan are different type of “the Other”, although they have different strategies but cannot escape from these force, cannot change their position of the Otherness. Throughout those analysis, the author thinks that the Otherness image of Jia Huan has complexity and diversity, besides his pure “ugliness” and “badness”, he also has demands and the extension of individual's value of life, we should care about each person's free will and independent value.The dissertation is composed of four parts in addition to conclusion. Chapter 1 summarizes the situation of study on Jia Huan in recent years, emphasize those studies are in the view of the Subject; Combing the concept of “the Other”, explains that “the Other” refers to the non-self-other. Chapter 2 analyses the differences and collisions between Jia Huan and Jia Baoyu and elucidates the connotation, then analyses how other family members hatred and marginalized Jia Huan. Chapter 3 analyses the resons cause Jia Huan became “the Other”. Chapter 4 analyses “the Other” of the subjects' strategies.
