Abstract/Summary:
The study is set to know, analyze and finally realize the reading habits and attitudes of the students at Dalian University of Technology (DUT), specifically English language (L2) reading and later relate them to the academic performance of the students, specifically English language proficiency. The study is mainly divided into three parts; Firstly, to find out the reading habits of the students. Secondly to find out the students’ attitudes towards reading. Finally, to relate the reading habits and attitude’s impacts on the language proficiency of the students. The study is conducted by questionnaire survey, based on five point Likert scale. This questionnaire is made to investigate the participants’ general attitudes towards reading and their reading preferences. A number of 641 is supposed sample size that is randomly. A total of 1200 questionnaires were distributed out of which 641 were returned back after being filled. The data collected by questionnaire is analyzed using SPSS Statistics 20 program. It is made out from the conducted survey that the students at DUT have healthy reading habits and their attitude towards reading is also positive. Moreover, it is made out that the reading habits of the students have remarkable impact on the academic performances of the students. The research in the end has made some suggestions and recommendations as well to foster reading habits and attitudes among university students for better language proficiency. The results are finally discussed.
