The report is based upon the author’s C-E translation practice of History of Cultural Communications between China and the World, a textbook edited by Prof. Liu Hui, Prof. Jiang Xin and Prof. Jiang Yi of Dalian University of Technology (DUT). The course is available to students from different grades of undergraduate education of DUT and they will be given two credits if they had listened carefully and passed the exam of the class, which consisted of a series of historical figures and events together with some comments of cultural communications between China and the world during the thirty two teaching hours. The textbook, which came into being as a result of the emphasis put upon liberal education of college students of DUT, not only focuses on delivering historical facts, but also the cultivation of divergent thinking. According to the guidance of Jef Verschueren’s adaptation theory and the characteristics of international students from different countries and regions, with different native tongues, cultures, backgrounds, attitudes, interests, requirements, levels of Chinese and English languages, and their reading habits, the English version of the textbook is presented to offer them China’s point of view. After the completion of the translation, the translator also tend to the supervisor and international students for further correction in order to convey the original text and its purposes in a clearer way.The report contains four parts. The first part gives a brief introduction to the translation practice, such as how the project is chosen, its purpose, significance and structure of the report. The second part explains the translation processes:the preparations to take before the translation, the factors to be considered in translation the translation, and the adjustments and modifications needed after the first and second drafts of translation. The third part presents translation examples that manifest the application of adaptation theory in the practice. Specific translation methods are also included in this part. In the last part the translator discusses and summarizes the practice, pointing out that of all the translation methods employed in the practice, literal translation strategy, intersemiotic translation and literal translation plus note are most useful for the translation of such materials for the international students studying in China.
