A Report On The E-C Translation Of The Lecture Manual Of VMware VSphere: Install, Configure, Manage

In recent years, science and technology have been playing a more and more important role in our daily life. In order to evangelize its virtualization products, VMware, Inc. published the book Lecture Manual Of VMware vSphere: Install, Configure, Manage, module 11 and module 12 of which are chosen as the basis of this translation report.Being a typical scientific and technical text, there are many technical terms and specific installation requirements: the translated version is expected to provide guidance and reference for technicians as well as learners. Thus, in order to meet this requirement, the author should pay more attention to the needs of target readers, and try her best to adjust her translation when necessary so as to transmit the information of the original text and achieve the purpose of the original text. “Skopos theory”, simplified as “the aim justifies the means”, is in accordance with the theme of scientific English translation, thus the author takes it as the guiding theory in her translating process.This report can be divided into five parts: preface, translation task description, translation process, case analysis and summary of the translation. By analyzing some typical cases, the author points out some translation skills, hoping to provide a reference for other translators.During the process of her translating, the author communicates with the technicians and editors frequently to make sure that she can understand the original text thoroughly. On this basis, taking the target readers' requirements into consideration, she shakes off the limit of “equivalent translation” to some extent to make her translation achieve the same guiding purpose as the original text. Through this translation practice, the author profoundly realizes the peculiarity, particularity and complexity of translation. Besides being familiar with the source language and target language, the translator should also acquire relevant professional knowledge. Otherwise, a translation can never be called a good translation no matter how fluent and beautiful it is.
