A Report On The Translation Of Chu Shijian:A Biography

This report is based on the translation of the chapter four of Chu Shijian:A Biography, amounting to about 11000 characters. The language of the book is plain and easy to understand, characterized with many idioms, four-character structures, Chinese culture-loaded expressions, sentences without subject and some long, complicated sentences.According to the text analysis, the author classifies it into informative and expressive text. On the basis of the text features and linguistic features of the biography, the author preliminarily translates the text guided by Newmark's communicative translation. This report describes the preparatory work before the translation, difficulties in the translation, specific solutions and proofreading. Under the guidance of communicative translation, the case study gives a detailed analysis of translation skills, including omission of redundant information, addition of complementary information, division of complicated sentences, synthesization of simple sentences, conversion of voices and parts of speech, sentence reconstruction and transliteration with explanation to resolve the problems resulting from some typical Chinese sentences and expressions such as Chinese culture-loaded expressions, long complicated sentences and sentences without subjects. Thus, the readability of the text has improved so that readers can easily accept the translation work, realizing the smooth dissemination of information. Finally, the author summarizes the gains and limitations and looks forward to the prospect of the translation of the Chinese biographies.Presently, there is no English version of Chu's biography. This report is committed to the research of the translation skills in Chu' biography under the guidance of Newmark' communicative translation, which is beneficial to introduce Chinese entrepreneurs, along with their entrepreneurship, to English-speaking readers. Then it helps to promote western readers' comprehensive understanding of Chu Shijian and his ambition and, to some extent, offers a reference to the English translation of Chinese biographies.
