Conversion is a frequently used method in translation and interpreting. It is usually referred to the shift of lexical category or parts of the sentence from SL to TL. In C-E translation, the conversion from Chinese verbs to English nouns is the most representative for the different features of Chinese and English. Studies of conversion have been conducted a lot. However, the methodologies used in these studies are still traditional ones. In recent years, corpus translation study has become an important field of translation study. The corpus can provide a large amount of empirical data for the researchers' quantitative analysis. But for its short history, there are only a small number of corpus-based empirical translation studies. And none of them focus on conversion. So the author proposes to write a thesis in this field. The thesis starts from the introduction of its background, purposes, structure, etc. Then the theory of conversion, the copora and tools of the thesis are introduced. The main object is a small sub-corpus built up by the author through collecting data from the PACCEL-S. After that, the author analyzes the learners' errors by following Croder's theory. Through comparing the students' words with the native speakers', the author finds out the features and causes of errors of the English majors' performance in using conversion. Those are misunderstanding of semanteme, ignorance of word class, limited vocabulary and insufficient competence of analyzing grammatical structure in a short time. Basing on these, the author offers some pedagogical suggestions. And the conclusion that V-N conversion can be applied when the context is “shi4(?)+ V + de(?)+N” is also drew.
