| The purpose of the Young Men’s Christian Association(Y.M.C.A) is to educate people in ethics, intellect, physique, and social skills, which aims to spread the Christian spirit to the Chinese, cultivate a sound personality, and create the Kingdom of God. After entering China, Y.M.C.A engaged in social services at personal accomplishment, knowledge access, physical exercise and group cooperation and development. It is embodied in social assistance, education and health. Y.M.C.A Social services have an important impact on China’s modernization.This article mainly discusses social service of Changsha Y.M.C.A in 1913-1945. During this period, there are a lot of natural disasters and wars in Hunan province, this make people in miserable condition. This is also an important period for Hunan province and Chinese to learn from the West and realize the modernization. And this is the most prominent historical period for Changsha Y.M.C.A, too. Firstly, there is a brief about establishment historical background, development course and operation mechanism of Changsha Y.M.C.A. Secondly, This article discussed Changsha Y.M.C.A social services through social assistance, education, medical and health undertakings. In social assistance, Changsha Y.M.C.A through application of relief, FFW way relief to disaster victims. Then military service and refugee relief have greatly supported the war against Japan. In education, Changsha Y.M.C.A not only established schools, united community to run mass education, held various lectures to enlighten people, serve the masses; but actively introduced advanced teaching philosophy, to promote the modernization of education and the exchange of Chinese and Western cultures. In medical hygiene, Changsha Y.M.C.A founded non-opium organization to assist the Government to launch non-opium campaigns; developed a variety of health knowledge campaigns, regulating the family campaigns to help the people to popularize modern health knowledge, attention to family and community health; organized sports, to improve people’s health.Finally, analyze the effect of Social Services of Changsha Y.M.C.A. In carrying out social services, Changsha Y.M.C.A establish close relationship with Hunan Community, use the Chinese way to do things, adapt to the changing social environment of Hunan, indigenization continue to strength. Of course Changsha Y.M.C.A carry out social services the fundamental purpose of Y.M.C.A of Changsha is to promote religious, there must be some conflict of interest, the process of indigenization is full of twists and obstacles,the social gospel as the dominant ideology of Changsha Y.M.C.A insists pacifism,.can not adapt to people’s needs of nationalism in the new historical stage, the YMCA of Changsha can not give up their religious position, not standing opposite the western countries..It lost advantage comparing with Communism, eventually resulting the dream of establishing the kingdom of God is shattered. |
