Application Of “Effort Model” To Consecutive Interpreting Project Of Seminar On Halal Food Certification 2014

As interpreters play a very important role in communication and exchanges among potential participants of the Seminar, it is highly relevant for them to effectively cope with field problems and then provide a better interpretation service. This paper, taking Seminar Consecutive Interpreting(CI) as the case study, attempts to analyze and discuss how the interpreter can reasonably allocate her efforts and attention to make the interpretation successfully complete.This paper, guided by Daniel Gile' s “Effort Model”, analyzes the difficulties in the process of CI project of “Seminar on Halal Food Certification 2014” and summarizes the corresponding coping strategies. The author discusses four major efforts under the Model,namely, Listening and Analysis Effort, Memory Effort, Note-Taking Effort and Production Effort in the project. As for each effort, there are some difficulties in allocating those efforts during the interpretation process, which greatly influences the interpreter's performance. With many examples taken from the interpretation project, the author points out difficulties first and then analyzes the examples to illustrate how to solve the problems and effectively allocate the interpreter's efforts so that she shall deliver a good interpretation to the audience.After specific discussion and analysis, the author summarizes eight coping strategies including extra-linguistic knowledge(ELK), semantic networks, logical patterns,visualization, general principles for note-taking, methods for note-taking of figures, direct translation & deverbalization and standards of good production in reply to those eight problems and challenges in the process of applying four major efforts to the project, which are auditory interference, technical words and expressions, dense information, memory without notes, note-taking of names, note-taking of figures, speaking style and sight interpreting. With those summarized coping strategies, the author hopes they will be helpful for the interpreter to effectively allocate her efforts and provide references for the interpreter's future project.
