The advent of hand-held computer-based devices gave rise to Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) as we know it today. With the integration of the mobile communication and internet, we are nowadays able to free our learning from time and space in its true sense. Tremendous researches have proved the effectiveness of MALL in various projects. Most of these researches focus on pre-smart phones and language learners’attitudes towards this relevant new learning method. Few studies explore the secret underneath such an effective method. This paper attempted to investigate the relevance between MALL and its language learners’Meta-cognitive strategies and expatiate on how MALL learners can achieve such a significant learning effect. A total of 100 first-year university students with engineer background were selected as participants of this study. They are from two English classes in Anhui Normal University. There is no significant difference in English and Meta-cognitive strategies between these two classes in the outset of the study according to the results of independent samples t-test on the scores from their placement exam and the survey concerning meta-cognitive strategies. The two classes are divided into control group and experimental group. In the experiment, the control group learned English in a traditional way, while the experimental group used the App to preview and review the text and vocabulary. The treatment lasted for a semester, after which both groups were given the same survey on meta-cognitive strategy. The results showed a significant difference on English proficiency and meta-cognitive strategy between the two groups did emerge.
