Alice Munro is a famous Canadian writer. She was awarded the Nobel Prize of Literature in October, 2013. She is the first short story writer awarded the Nobel Prize in literature history. The collection of short stories Runaway is Alice Munro’s masterpiece. She has a reputation for “the greatest short story writer”. Munro’s novels use plain, clear language and unique narrative skills. Through flexible use of the theory of narrative time, craftily transforming story rhythm, carefully creating suspense and other outstanding narrative strategies, Munro forms her unique style.Through analyzing the Theory of Narrative Time and Narrative Focalization, this thesis explores the theme of emotion in Juliet’s life as well as Juliet’s runaway from her family and herself in Chance, Soon and Silence. This thesis consists of four chapters. Chapter one introduces Alice Munro’s life experiences and the previous researches on her works at home and abroad. And the structure of this thesis is also discussed. Based on the theory of narrative time,Chapter two analyzes the use of omission, summary, scene, pause and other techniques to transform the narrative rhythm and presents the characters’ inner world which is both complex and innocent in order to manifest the theme of emotion and runaway. Chapter three analyzes the short story based on the theory of focalization of Genette. This part discusses the artful combination of zero focalization, internal focalization and external focalization in the stories and its function. It also analyzes the reasons why Juliet elopes with the married man Eric from different people’s perspectives. From the letter which Eric writes to Juliet, this thesis analyzes the epistolary narrative features in Chance. Chapter four discusses the multi-theme in those short stories on the basis of the analysis of narrative techniques in previous two chapters, including the theme of emotion and runaway which are respectively reflected in the change and outcome of the relationship between the two couples and in the Juliet’s runaway from her family and herself. The last chapter is the conclusion. In short, through the flexible use of various narrative techniques in the stories, Alice Munro not only adds the aesthetic beauty but also highlights and deepens the themes.
