With the rapid development of our economy,the inter-disciplinary talents who not only master English but also grasp professional knowledge arc needed in all works of life.It is very important to cultivate the students' major skills and enhance their English capacity to meet the growing demands of the society.Therefore,it is necessary to discuss the needs analysis of English learning for the students in Auto-Repair Department.On the basis of different studies on needs analysis abroad and at home,this paper adopts the models of needs analysis of Hutchison &Waters(1987)and Chen Bingbing(2010).A survey is undertaken among the 220 students?75 graduates and 10 management staffs in order to analyze the learning needs and social needs in the form of revised questionnaires and interview.The paper intends to discuss the following two research questions: What are the English learning needs of the in-school students in Auto-Repair Department? What are the social needs of the graduates and management staffs?By the survey,we find that regarding the importance of English,most of the students in school tend to improve their reading and speaking in spite of their poor basis and bad interest in English.They hope the teaching material is improved according to their English proficiency and professional knowledge.Their ideal English teacher is an inter-disciplinary talent who not only is proficient in English and Auto but also has some enterprises experience.The students hope that they have a preference for the task—centered teaching mode and the situational teaching method.They also want they can have more practical chances to study with the auto-repair enterprise.For the students after graduation,English is not only needed in their work but also in their personal promotion and pay.They should use English in “reading signs and codes ”,“reading technical Material” and “making oral communication”.Most graduates' performance can't satisfy the need of the enterprise at all and their command of Auto English needs to be improved.Students hope that the enterprise encourages learning through practice and calls for school—enterprise cooperation.To solve the above problems,the author gives some suggestions on the English teaching which includes the improvement in teaching focus,teaching material,teaching mode,course arrangement and teaching force.It is hoped that this study will give some useful advice on the English teaching and its reform.
