With the increasing development of economic globalization, more and more foreign friends would like to visit China to appreciate the unique Chinese culture shaped by the history of five thousand years and learn profound Chinese culture. As an extensive and significant culture, Chinese culture is comprised of several regional cultures. But due to few publicity, many local cultures are not known to the public. Hence, this report focuses on the translation of Sichuan Folk Tales, expecting more and more readers to know Sichuan and its special culture as well as its unique cultural atmosphere. In addition, the translation of Sichuan Folk Tales and relative research fields to folk tales are rare at present. Therefore, the translation is significant not only for horizon-broadening in terms of personal improvement, but also for the cultural exchanges and mutual understanding of people with different cultural backgrounds.Based on the Chinese to English translation of Sichuan Folk Tales, the features of original language and style have been analyzed by the author. Combined with typical cases, the author discusses the English translation strategies of Chinese folk tales in accordance with the domestication and foreignization method put forward by L.Venuti from the perspective of word, sentences and so on. This report is made up of project introduction, translation process, translation method, translation case study, and conclusion. Project introduction presents a general introduction of the translation task. Translation process consists of three parts:preparation, translation stage and proofreading. Preparation involves a general introduction to the classification and content of source language, stylistic feature, the feature of language and instrument preparation. Translation stage covers how the author analyzes, converts and restructures the source texts so as to reach the authentic expression of the target language. Proofreading is the last procedure of the translation where the author emphases its importance in translation. Translation methods are domestication and foreignization in which the author gives a general introduction to their background, their relationship and how they adopt. Translation case study is the focus of this paper in which the author introduces several typical examples to discuss and analyze the essential and difficult points including the translation of names, special words and sentences under the guidance of domestication and foreignization. The methods used to deal with them cover combining method, omission and examples are presented in detail. And the last part is a general conclusion to the whole report where the author summarizes her inspiration to translation and her planing to future,etc.There is a certain kind of research significance from the perspectives of both theory and practice through translating Sichuan Folk Tales. In theory, through the translation and analysis of this folk tales, the report has tested the instructional role and explanatory power of the domestication and foreignization theories in the folk tales translation. In practice, translation thoughts and skills adopted in this project is conducive to deepening a further cognition and understanding to the theories in practice, so as to really put the theory into practice and lay a solid foundation for future translation.
