A Practice Report On The C-E Translation Of Chinese Myths

The original text of this translation is selected from some chapters of Chinese Myth,which consists of several short stories of traditional Chinese myths. As is known to all, myth is one of the most important achievements made by human beings. It reflects our ancestors’ exploration and understanding toward the nature and ancient society, which is of great importance to the research of contemporary culture and history, literary creation and the protection of culture diversity. Although many western myths, such as Greek myths and Roman myth are familiar to most Chinese people,Chinese myths, as an essence of the traditional Chinese culture, are relatively seldom known by western people. And some current translation versions of Chinese myths have not become prevalent in western countries due to the cultural differences. Such a situation not only limits foreign people to know Chinese culture better but also hinders the preservation of the global cultural diversity. Since there are few English versions of Chinese Myths at home and abroad, the author attempts to translate the selected chapters, states the translation process and analyzes the method adopted in the translation as well. In this thesis, the author will discuss the methods from the perspective of cultural translation through listing cases. And the conclusion and suggestions of this translation will be made at the end of this thesis.The report mainly includes a general background introduction of the project, the translation process, containing preparation before the translation and the stages of translation, the guiding theory as well as a analysis of skills and methods used in accomplishing this project. Through the detailed analysis, the author finds that the words and sentences containing cultural meaning should be paid due attention and proper strategies should be applied for them while coping with them. In this report,therefore, cultural approach is used as the guiding theory to render the cultural elements like style of the text and translation of Chinese cultural words with the aims of expressing their cultural features and trying to deal with the gap existing in C-E translation of Chinese myths.
