From the perspective of cultural ecology, cultural environment refers to the background and conditions of human being engaged in cultural creation, cultural communication and other cultural activities. Because art is the outstanding embodiment of culture, the variety of artistic creation is always closely linked with the cultural environment. In the past 70 years, the cultural environment in Inner Mongolia has undergone the transformation from being conservative and singular to being opening up and diversified gradually with the creation brought by it being changed correspondingly. Watercolor art, unlike Chinese paintings, oil paintings which has become an art representative of Inner Mongolia art, has become relatively mature after decades of development from the original status of being tried by only several artists after years of development, during which, it also undergone through different tendency and pursuit because of culture environment. Before 1980, the social and cultural environment in Inner Mongolia was much more closed than that of nowadays. This relatively closed cultural environment directly affected the creation of Inner Mongolia's watercolor painting at that time. The Inner Mongolia customers and culture described by old generation of painters, Zhang Guangbi, Xu Jian, Wang Zhiying and so on has no much relationship with the transformation of Chinese art world regardless of the art language or expression subject. At that time, it was just the direct expression of the unique cultural landscape in Inner Mongolia. With the time passing and the influx of modern industrial and commercial civilization, natural environment has been change and all kinds of cultural philosophy and art concept in Inner Mongolia begin to spread in Inner Mongolia and the art circle to some extent, which trigger the culture form transformed "singular" to "diversify and complex" Such a social and cultural situation is bound to affect the creative mentality of watercolor painters, so the ancient Chinese painting mark in still life painting is seen and the means of exploration for watercolor painting in most of the works of Meng Xianbo which is the expression of grasslands scenery. Of course, there are different degrees of artistic pursuit and exploration in different ways carried out by Yun Xiwang, Wang Rong, Miao Rui, Liu Jinyan, Chang Hai, Ding Xiaohui, and others. In the past 70 years, especially nearly 40 years form the new period, Inner Mongolia watercolor painters have made exploration in different days in the premise of the cultural environment constantly being changing with many of their works obtaining the modern quality and spirit, which reflects the painting status of Inner Mongolia at that time to some extent.
