On Redundancy Translation Of Government Work Report From The Perspective Of Information Theory

Since more than thirty years’ reform and opening up, China has drawn the attention of the whole world in politics, economy, culture and other aspects, and has served an increasingly pivotal role in the international issues. Comprehensive national strength and social status of China has been significantly improved, which has a profound impact on the world. With the increasingly frequent contacts between China and the international community, the importance of translation is obvious and self-evident. Covering our fundamental national conditions, policies and guidelines, and political affiliation etc, the government publicity text mainly refers to the speech of the Party and state leaders, the government documents and government work reports, which is an important channel for the international community to understand China. The annual Government Work Report is the best window for the global village to realize the development and tendency of our nation. Therefore, the translation of this kind of text plays a vital role in the process of external exchange, translated version should be highly faithful to the original text. However, redundant information was inundated in the C-E translation, especially in the translation of political text. Though many domestic scholars have begun to study the English version of Government Work Report, the translation studies of such issues like how to make the target language readers receive complete information apace and efficiently and how to avoid Chinglish and unnecessary redundancies are still insufficient systematic or synthetical. Thus, the author attempts to conduct a comprehensive analysis and research of the English version of Government Work Report based on redundancy phenomenon, hoping to obtain redundancy balance in the process of translation, improve the translation quality, and ensure the success of communication activities.Redundancy is a kind of intrinsic property of language, which refers to the spare information exceeded the minimum required amount in the information transferring process, its existence is reasonable and inevitable. This thesis chooses the 2015 Government Work Report as a case study, mainly to explore how to supplement the necessary elements and information, adjust the moderate redundant additions theoretically by collecting and analyzing large corpus of redundant components with examples based on the Information Theory. As a result, this thesis would probe the proper techniques and norms to make translation version correspond to the redundancy rate of the target language, and obtain redundancy equivalence between the source text and the target text, making it better understood by target language readers, and then ensuring veracity and accuracy of information transmission.This thesis first analyzes the writing features of the Government Work Report and introduces its overseas and domestic translation research status, and then makes a comprehensive and detailed study on the redundancy of the translated version from the vocabulary, syntax and discourse levels. Finally the author puts forward the translation principles of Government Work Report from the perspective of the Information Theory and summarizes the practical significance and deficiencies of this thesis.
