A Report On Translation Of The Spirit Of Chao-Shan’s Culture (Excerpt)

China’s culture has extensive knowledge and profound scholarship with a long history. Chao-Shan culture, as an important component of Han culture branch, is a regional commercial culture with distinctive characteristics. Under the background of cultural globalization today, it is extremely urgent to spread China’s culture and upgrade its soft strength. Therefore, it is of great significance to conduct the research on the regional cultures with Chinese characteristics, for the purpose of cultural transmission.This paper conducts a translation practice on the regional culture of Chao-Shan, on the basis of the book Chao-Shan Cultural Spirit. It summarizes the process of the entire translation practice report and translation methods. In case analysis, this paper focuses on the methods to process the difficult and unintelligible cultural words. The original article concentrates on the commercial culture and regional custom culture of Chao-Shan.Therefore, this paper involves in many of cultural-bound words. There are different thinking models between China and the western world, it is impossible to find the completely matching phrases in the target language matching those cultural-specific words.And the translation of those words becomes the difficult points of discussion in this translation practice. From the cross-cultural perspective and on the basis of the relevant theories, this translation practice report discusses the translation theories of practical writing through closely integrating the characteristics of cultural-oriented articles, in order to convey the cultural connotations of the original articles to the greatest extent. Thus, this paper applies the translation methods, including transliteration with interpretation,paraphrasing, literal translation and liberal translation, as the processing reference for culture-loaded words in Chinese-English translation. Meanwhile, this article is an informative text that features rigorous and simple wordage and loose structure of sentence patterns, with a large amount of sentences without subjects, run-on sentences and loose sentences. The translation methods include adding subjects, combining and separating sentences and changing word order, to effectively convey the cultural connotations of the original text for cultural communication, on the basis of conforming to the linguistic specification of English.This paper includes four parts. The first part is the description of the translation tasks,and the background meaning and theoretical basis of this translation project are mainly introduced. The second part is the description of the translation process, including the preparation for this translation practice, the problems encountered in the translationprocess and the proofreading after translation. Then, emphasis is laid to the elaboration of case analyses, and the key points, difficulties, strategies and methods of translation. The last part focuses on the translation issues and reflections.This paper adheres to the principle of transmitting the culture with Chinese characteristics, aiming at deepening people’s understanding on China’s regional cultures,through the translation and communication of a regional cultural text. Therefore, this translation practice has the promotion for transmitting the culture with Chinese characteristics.
