The product approach,the process approach and the genre approach are three kinds of teaching methodologies widely used for English writing.Considering that each has its advantages and disadvantages.Badger & White come up with the process-genre approach based on the integration of these three approaches,which has exerted a profound influence over the English teaching.Hyland proposes that genre has become one of the significant and influential notions in language teaching.With the teaching of academic English writing drawing more and more attention,how to implement the process genre approach in teaching academic English writing for postgraduate has gained increasing concern among many scholars.Abstract is an important part of academic papers,is intended to give a brief and concise introduction of the essay without annotations to help readers to get a general understanding of its main content quickly.The rigorousness of academic abstracts in the international academic exchanges,to a great extent,plays a decisive role in the recognition of an essay in the era of information explosion.With the ever-increasing of the international academic exchanges,the requirement for the quality of academic paper writing of non-English major postgraduates has been raised to a higher level in the academic world.As a result,this dissertation attempts to explore the implication of process genre approach on how to improve academic abstract writing of non-English major postgraduates.This study,based on the process genre approach by Badger and White,is conducted with 40 academic paper abstracts randomly selected from the Journal of Materials Science and International Journal of Computer Vision.In order to ensure the vitality and consider the disciplinary differences.To begin with,Bhatia's four-move structure is employed to analyze the writing characteristics of these abstracts in terms of the purpose,method,result and conclusion and then apply them theoretically to the academic English paper writing in order to promote students' macroscopic recognition of such discourses.Next,several typical abstracts are chosen for a detailed analysis to demonstrate the procedures of Process Genre Approach in academic English writing teaching of non-English major postgraduates.Besides the elaborate analysis of syntactical and lexical features of these specific samples,such factors as disciplinary culture and convention beyond the texts are summarized meanwhile.From the research and analysis,implications of the study are derived as follows: the application of process genre approach in academic English writing teaching is surely helpful for students to have a good command of the lexical,grammatical and rhetorical features.In order to make students to have a through understanding of the integrity and complexities of academic discourse,they should be guided to attach greater attention to factors beyond the text and probe into genres.To sum up,the ultimate purpose of the research is to enable students to have a macro-recognition of the genre features of academic English abstracts and further improve their academic English abstract writing ability effectively.
