The thesis is composed of a translation practice and a translation report. The selected translation material is the second chapter:"Characterizing and Assessing Cognitive Aging" of the book Cognitive Aging:Progress in Understanding and Opportunities for Action. It's a study report of cognitive aging published by the National Academies Press. The selected chapter is an introduction of characteristics and assessments of cognitive aging, in which age-related changes of cognitive aging from the perspectives of attention, memory, executive function, neural mechanism, etc. are analyzed and some tests and measurements to evaluate changes of cognitive ability are introduced.The translation report comprises four chapters. Chapter one states the background of the translation project, theoretical guidance, purpose and significance. Chapter two summarizes the main content and analyzes the language characteristics of the source text. Chapter three elaborates translation process, which is also the core part of the whole report. This part firstly makes a statement of the pre-translation preparation. Then the theoretical guidance in this practice is expounded in detail. Moreover, the key points and difficulties encountered in the translation process are analyzed. The translator emphatically analyzes translation of terminology, passive voice and long difficult sentence. In addition, translation methods of amplification, omission and conversion with examples are applied. Last is a description of revision process. Chapter Four generalizes unresolved problems and implications in the translation practice.Under the guidance of three rules of skopostheorie-Sopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the translator analyzes and sums up translation difficulties and methods of scientific text. Through this translation practice, the translator has a better understanding of language features of scientific text and pursues the relevant translation principles and techniques. Meanwhile, she has recognized her own inadequacy in translation. The translator expects that the terminology as well as translation methods and strategies can shed some light on the translation in the field of cognitive aging in the future.
