Hedges are an important part of fuzzy language; hedges are widely used in people’s daily communication. Since 1972, Lakoff proposed the concept of hedges, hedges has attracted more and more attention of scholars at home and abroad, a lot of scholars do many research from philosophy, semantics, intercultural communication, pragmatic etc. But the research on hedges used as politeness strategy in business negotiation is very less. In this thesis we use the politeness principle to study the hedges used in business negotiation, aimed to analysis the application of the hedges in business negotiation in the perspective of politeness principle. Business negotiation is a complex of communication, with the development of the world economy; business negotiation plays an increasingly important role in business affairs. In business negotiations, in order to avoid misunderstanding, usually use precise language to conduct business negotiations, but most people ignore the language itself is fuzzy. In fact with the continuous development of the global economy, the role of business negotiation becomes more important, also with strong purpose. The success of business negotiation is directly related to the economic benefit, while the hedges play an important role in the business negotiation. In the business negotiation process hedges has been used as effective communication strategies in business negotiations, in order to achieve the communicative purpose.In this thesis, we use the Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies and Leech’s politeness principle as the theoretical framework. Politeness Principle is an important research in the field of pragmatics. Politeness principle plays important role in interpersonal communication, in the business negotiation, in order to avoid cause misunderstanding; increase the chance for successful negotiation e should use the politeness principle, to maintain the relationship between the two sides of the negotiations. To promote the smooth progress of the negotiations. In this thesis we mainly talk about these questions, hedges as politeness strategy used in business negotiation, and the pragmatic function of hedges used in business negotiation. Through the analysis we found, hedges is widely used in the business negotiation, and we also found when people have business negotiation the hedges can used as a kind of politeness strategy, to use the hedges in the right way, can make the business negotiation proceed smoothly, avoid the conflict in the business negotiation, save the face between the negotiators, and finally reach the goal of business negotiation.In this thesis we analyze the hedges using in business negotiation, hope through this study can offer some advice to the business negotiation, at the same time we can see to use politeness language in business negotiation can make the business negotiation to proceed smoothly, and also create a harmonious relations of cooperation in business negotiation, make the business negotiation successful, and finally reach the goal of business negotiation.
