Bernard Malamud(1914-1986)is one of the most prominent Jewish writers.Most of his works reflect the hardship and perseverance of Jewish lower-class.He is capable of depicting the destiny of common people with humanism.This thesis applies Freud’s personality theory,and elaborates the psychic world of these three main characters – Frank,Morris and Helen in The Assistant,which is Malamud’s first novel,and reveals their destiny.This thesis comprises of six chapters.The first chapter introduces the author and his works,objectives and significance of this thesis and relevant researches at home and abroad.The second chapter elaborates the theoretical framework: Freud’s personality theory,and its application in The Assistant.The third chapter explores Frank’s inner psychic world from the perspective of the id,the ego and the super-ego,analyzing the process from degeneration,awakening to sublimation.He succeeds in coordinating with the relationship of these three components,which reveals his transformation from a drifter into “Saint Francis” and his conversion to Judaism.The fourth chapter probes into Morris’ s the id,the ego and the super-ego.It draws the conclusion that the goodness,manifested in his ego,leads to his tragic death.Morris abides by the Torah which is the Law for Jews.The ego embodies in his goodness and helping others.However,the poverty and hardship compels the exposure of his jealousy and aversion in his id.As a saint,Morris forgives everyone whoever perpetrates immoral act.The fifth chapter discusses the personality of Helen.As the second generation of Jewish immigrants,Helen’s ego is manifested in her strong desire for education and life and she has her understanding about love.It concludes that the super-ego – goodness and forgiveness – makes her embrace the true love.Different from traditional Judaism,Helen’s concept towards sexuality is to treat it naturally and fully enjoy the delight.The sixth chapter summarizes the main contents of this thesis,the conclusion and limitations of present study and suggestions for further study.
