| With the development of information technology and the Internet, National Basketball Association(NBA) is gradually known by Chinese people. Its influence in China has steadily increased on daily and NBA has gradually become an important bridge of cultural exchange between China and the United States. As one of the nation’s four biggest sports leagues, NBA has an astonishing news media exposure, which had already seized an increasingly important role of Chinese sports news media. The author found that in recent years, research on English sports news translation came out in an endless flow. However, when it comes to the translation of English NBA news, there are only few specific related studies. NBA news has not only the same characteristics of general news but also a unique style of its own, which includes peculiar linguistic features, exotic cultural background and a large amount of technical terms. At present, the translations of NBA news in China are made up of different levels, which has become a serious factor of impediment to China’s basketball career and its communication overseas.This paper studies E-C translation of NBA news from the angle of functionalist translation theory. In view of the four rules of functionalist translation theory, which is the skopos rules, the coherence rule, the fidelity rule and loyalty rule, translators should exert their subjective initiative and try to transfer the information which the source language contains to the target language as much as they could under the premise of skopos rule. The translation of NBA news put more emphasis on its practicability which serve the purpose of transmitting information to the readers. The German functionalist theory pointed out that translation is a kind of behavior with specified aim. The content of translation should have its aim and function. This also determines the German functionalist translation theory has a instructive significance to the translation of NBA news.This paper mainly discusses the problems exist in the E-C translation of NBA news from the perspective of functionalist translation theory. The whole dissertation consists of five chapters: In the first chapter, the author put forward the research background, the meaning of the research and the problems to be solved of the whole paper based on functionalist theory. The next chapter is the literature review, the author discusses the traditional translation theories and briefly introduces the development of functionalist translation theory and the various academic opinions and achievements. Meanwhile, this chapter also talks about the basic rules of functionalist theory and its contribution to China’s translation studies. The third chapter analyzes the cultural factors which made NBA news language unique through the research combination of “lexical dimension, grammatical dimension and rhetorical dimension” and at the same time, how to make NBA new translation rational and practical under the guidance of functionalist translation theory. In chapter four, the author analyzes the functionality of NBA news and find out the causes of the errors of the NBA news translation through the use of the functionalist translation theory. The fifth chapter is the conclusion part of this paper, in this section, the author here to summarize the whole thesis and put forward the professional quality, knowledge of language and translation perspective which a skilled NBA news translator needed.It is found that though the study of the German functionalist translation theory, which provides a reasonable translation strategy and also a mature translation theory for sports news translation especially NBA news translation in China. This measure will not only enhance the overall quality of sports news translators but also promote the development of both NBA news translation and sports industry in China. |
