The rapid economic development in China attracts people all over the world to come to China, which also increases the demand for liaison interpreting. It cannot be ignored that liaison interpreters play an important role in promoting exchanges between China and foreign countries. This report is based on the interpreter’s liaison interpreting experience. The interpreter provided liaison interpreting service for Mr. Zhang, president of Hunan Huaming Technology Co., Ltd during the Shanghai International Business Summit on November 20th, 2013 and the luncheon afterwards. It was a business summit, and participants were prominent businessmen at home and abroad. The summit consisted of three parts, namely the keynote speech in the morning, the award ceremony in the noon and the luncheon in the afternoon. The preparation section was divided into two parts in chronological sequence. The first part was from November 15th to 19th, and the second part started after meeting the client in person at Changsha Huanghua International Airport on November 19th. In the task processing section, the author depicted the liaison interpreting experience in details.Interpreting is interaction in essence, and the interpreter plays the key role of intermediary agent. His or her performance to the perfection of interaction is undoubtedly important. There are three fundamental elements of interpreting:professional attitudes, code of conduct and communication abilities, which determine the quality of interpreting. Professional attitudes and code of conduct for the interpreter are very complicated topics, and in this study, the interpreter will only discuss issues that affected his own interpreting service. There are the interpreter’s self-image, the behavior of the liaison interpreter, basic crisis management, and the roles of the liaison interpreter. In the communication ability section, the interpreter discussed and analyzed the most frequently-used two tactics:omissions and additions. Later on, from the point of content schema, the interpreter described several examples from his liaison interpreting service and other interpreting experience during his internship at GAC-Fiat.From the description and analysis of the task, the report draws the following conclusions. Firstly, conference interpreting has a settled topic and certain content, while liaison interpreting is more unpredictable in its content. Thus, it poses a higher standard for the liaison interpreter’s comprehension knowledge and quality. Due to this, the preparation beforehand is very likely non-directional and ineffective. Thus, the liaison interpreter should keep learning. It is important to be prepared to take small steps which will eventually combine to become big ones Secondly, the professional attitude and code of conduct are an integral part of the evaluation for a qualified interpreter. Being one of the indispensable agents in social interaction and interpreting, the interpreter is anything but a language machine. The liaison interpreter will affect both parties, and he should pay close attention to his behavior. Finally, it is proved that some basic tactics and interpreting theory will facilitate the information-processing and interpreting service. Interpreters should put theory into practice, and improve their skills in practice.
