Listening plays a vital role in both language learning and communication. Due to the realization of its importance, recently much more attention has paid to the following aspects:(1) the process of listening comprehension; (2) the diagnostic analysis of listening comprehension including exploring sub-skills involved in it, problems encountered by listeners and approaches to successful listening comprehension. However, few empirical studies have adopted the sub-skill approach to diagnose listeners'problems through language testing. On the basis of CEPT listening test, this thesis makes a detailed diagnostic analysis of learners'errors from the perspective of sub-skills, with the purpose of offering corresponding feedback and remedial suggestions to learners at different levels. As a result, it hopes to improve learners'listening ability and instruction of English listening.Three questions are addressed in this thesis:(1) What are the common errors made by test-takers in CEPT listening test? (2) Are there any differences in error types made by test-takers of different listening levels in the listening test of CEPT? (3) What feedback and remedial suggestions can we offer to test-takers based on the diagnostic analysis to improve their listening comprehension proficiency? The subjects in my study are 5,001 non-English-major freshmen in HNU. By diagnostic approach, research indicates that test-takers have more difficulties in affix recognition, details recognition in discourse and inference, deduction, or comprehension of the speaker's attitudes. In addition, there clearly exist some differences in distribution of errors among test-takers at various levels. Basically, those who are at higher level have performed better than those at lower level. In general, the beginners are supposed to improve their decoding skills first while others should make efforts to enhance their meaning construction skills. Conclusions suggest the imbalance in listening sub-skills among foreign language learners, thus, the targeted learning and teaching are necessary. With the joint efforts of learners and teachers, the listening ability can be enhanced.
