Report On The Translation Of Feminist Translation Academic Papers

With huge growth in the number of academic disciplines nowadays, understanding and promoting communication between classes of different knowledge interests have become vital to our academic futures. An academic paper is a type of disciplined and purposeful writing,containing theoretical knowledge, research methodologies and findings. It will also summarize the current state of knowledge and theory on the given subject. For a beginner in one subject, the act of translating an academic paper is a rapid way to acquire fundamental knowledge for academic communication and inter-disciplinary skills.In this report, two academic papers on Spanish feminist translation theory and practice are selected as source texts. The first one is The Curious Incident of Feminist Translation in Galicia:Courtcases, Lies and Gendern@tions by María Reimóndez, and the second one is Feminist Translation? No Way! Spanish Specialised Translators' Disinterest in Feminist Translation by Mercedes Bengoechea. These two papers basically share the same research perspective and give reasons for the predicament of feminist translation proposals in Spain. The selection of source texts is based on my study on the status quo of writing in the Chinese feminist translation, which is laden with a single narrative structure. Introducing more western methodologies, the English-Chinese translation of foreign academic papers is vital to developing China's feminist translation studies.To conduct the translation, the language features of two papers were analyzed respectively from lexical, syntactic and textual levels. According to the features, i.e. terminologies, complex sentence structures, and enhanced coherence, I used tools, such as Trados and different dictionaries to assist me and applied selected principles for translation to construct a detailed plan for the translation process.The translation are analyzed from two perspectives. The first one concerns the linguistic perspective, including the three levels of lexis, syntax and textual analysis, wherein specific translation skills, such as amplification, conversion, omission, division and combination are used widely. The other perspective concerns analysis of the acquisition of background knowledge and the theoretical impact on translation practice is discussed.Acquiring background knowledge is proved to be necessary for translation and there is evidence for understanding the impact of translation theories on the practice of the translation process. Notwithstanding this insight, there remain unanswered questions that require further thought concerning the exact relationship between translation theory and practice.
