A Report On The Translation Of Three Pieces Of Prose By Echo Chan

This report is based on the Chinese-English translation practice of three pieces of prose from the renowned Taiwanese female writer Echo Chan's prose collection Stories of Sahara, namely, Chinese Restaurant in the Desert, Getting Married, and One Night in the Desert. Echo's prose vividly describes her romantic love stories and legendary life in Africa and embodies her unique personality and traditional Chinese value and outlook. Thus, Echo's prose has great readability and translation value. The purpose of this practice is to strengthen the translator's ability of putting translation theories into practice and provide reference to present Chinese literary translation practice.The report firstly introduces purposes of this translation practice, that is, the communicative objective and the translator's personal goals. Echo's personality, growth and contents of her prose are further introduced in order to understand the background of this translation practice. Texts of the selected prose are also analyzed in detail to understand the prose style and language features. Based on these analysis, the translator applies Yanfu's translation theory of "Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance" in the practice in order to achieve a translated text true to the original in content and spirit, accessible to target readers and attractive to them in style. The most important part of the report is case studies, which illustrate some translation strategies for solving major problems occurred in translation of certain words, expressions, run-on sentences and colloquial expressions under the guidance of Yanfu's translation theory. In order to achieve "faithfulness" and "expressiveness", the translator applies translation strategies such as literal translation, liberal translation, amplification, omission, domestication, foreignization, split and reorganization; in order to achieve "elegance", the translator mainly uses authentic words, expressions and sentences in the translation of the text, especially dialogues and interjections in order to fully convey emotions and attitudes expressed in the original text and eventually deliver its prose style. Through this translation practice, the translator has obtained more comprehensive knowledge of Echo's prose and improved English-Chinese translation skills.
