Objective: To explore the iron content of gray nucleus in brain of PD patients by using Susceptibility Weighted Imaging(SWI,MRI imaging),and to discuss the correlation of iron deposition in the brain of early and late onset Parkinson’s disease. Methods: 24 cases of patients who had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease were collected from Sichuan Provincial People’s Hospital clinic and ward as PD group. In that there are 6 early-onset patient and 18 late-onset patient. In the control group,24 healthy volunteers were matched well with the age and sex of the PD group. All the subjects were examined by magnetic resonance imaging and susceptibility weighted imaging in Sichuan Provincial people’s hospital. Then the imaging and phase data contain subject’s both sides of putamen, caudate nuclei, pallidum, substantia nigra and red nucleus is collected at a time, transferred to the workstation that can process those image data. These region of brain are collectively named as Region Of Interest(ROI)and we use these to compare and analyze the phase values and clinical data(scales,etc.).Results: there was no significant difference in iron deposition between the two sides of the normal group(p>0.05),and the phase value of the serious symptom side and the mild symptom side of the PD group was different in the red nucleus and had statistical significance(p < 0.05);There were differences in the three regions(substantia nigra, putamen and Globus pallidum)of patients with Parkinson’s disease, the data were statistically significant(p < 0.05).The phase value of the head of caudate nucleus was significantly correlated with the severity of PD(p < 0.05).The phase of the caudate nucleus area in the mild symptom side of PD group had significant negative correlation with the H-Y score(p < 0.5);the phase of both sides of pallidum has significant negative correlation with the MDSUPDRS score(p<0.05);the rank of putamen phase has significant different change between early-onset and late-onset PD patients. Conclusion: the iron deposition in the brain can be accurately evaluated by the measurement of the phase value.Magnetic sensitive imaging can clearly show the deep gray matter nuclei in the brain. The early onset and late onset PD patients’ brain iron deposition are different, and that maybe involved in pathology and processing of PD.It is found that iron deposition is more significant in the PD patients than that in control group on the both sides of the substantia nigra and the iron deposition of mild symptom side of putamen is severe than that in subjects of control group.Compared with previous studies, areas of iron deposition are less than before. The iron deposition in putamen of EOPD was more significant than that in LOPD.It indicates that early onset PD and late onset PD may have different pathophysiological mechanisms, which may also be one of the reasons for the difference in the clinical symptoms and disease processing of early onset PD and late onset PD.
