Objective:Subacute thyroiditis(SAT)is a transient inflammatory thyroid disease.Patients with SAT usually complain of pain or uncomfortable in the thyroid region, associated with tenderness and swelling of the gland,as well as foreseeable thyroid dysfunction.SAT is a thyroid disease of unknown etiology, there is no definitive therapy for it.The aim of this retrospective study was to compare the therapeutic effects, treatment time, treatment frequency and side effects of compound betamethasone, glucocorticoids(GC)and nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDs)in patients with SAT.Methods:This is a retrospective observation study involving 95 patients who were diagnosed with SAT between 2013-2015 at the Sir Run Run Shaw Hospital affiliated to Zhejiang University. The medical records and follow-up data were analyzed. The subjects were assigned into three groups according to the different treatment:The Intramuscular injection group of 32 patients received compound betamethasone, the oral group of 34 patients received GC,and the oral group of 29 patients received NSAIDs.The differences between the three groups include time for disappearance of initial symptoms, time for normalization of thyroid function, treatment time, treatment frequency, side effects, recurrence rate and permanent hypothyroidism rate were observed. Results:The time for disappearance of initial symptoms, treatment time and treatment frequency are 5(3-6.25)days,13(1-18.5)days and 2(1-2)times,respectively,in the intramuscular injection group, and shoter than the two other groups(p<0.05).AS for side effects, the intramuscular injection group was lower than the NSAIDs group, and have significant difference(p<0.05),but was almost identical for the intramuscular injection group and the GC group(p>0.05).However,the Intramuscular injection group was similar to the other two groups in the time for normalization of thyroid function, recurrence rate and permanent hypothyroidism rate(p>0.05).Conclusions:Our study demonstrated the superiority of intramuscular injection with compound betamethasone in patients with SAT in the resolution of initial symptoms, treatment frequency, treatment time and side effects.
