Background : Laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma(LSCC)is the main type of human laryngeal cancer, which is one of the most common head and neck malignancies.Surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are the traditional treatments for LSCC,and many new methods are used for LSCC recent years, but the outcomes remain poor especially for advanced LSCC patients.Traditional diagnosis and identification of LSCC by pathological methods including TNM staging, examination of the metastasis in lymph nodes provide guides for LSCC treatment but still limited.Further study of the intrinsic molecular mechanisms of the initiation, development, growth, migration, invasion of LSCC is meaningful and urgent.Finding of new molecular targets could help develop new targeted therapic methods.C-Maf inducing protein(CMIP)is an important gene that mainly expresses in human nervous system and participates in kidney diseases and study related behaviours. Moreover,CMIP is reported to be an oncogene in human Hodgkin lymphoma. It is still unknown of the role of CMIP in human LSCC.Objective: To investigate the expression of CMIP in human laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and polyp tissues, and analyze their association with patient clinicopathological parameters and survival. Methods: Real-time PCR assay was used to detect the expression of CMIP m RNA in28 cases of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and 23 cases of polyp fresh tissue specimens.Immunohistochemical staining was used to detect the expression of CMIP in 86 cases of Formalin-Fixed and Parrffin-Embedded laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and 29 cases of polyp tissue specimens. The clinicopathological and prognostic significance of CMIP expression was investigated in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.Results:1.The expressions of CMIP m RNA and protein were both significantly increased in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma, compared with polyp tissue specimens.2.The expression of CMIP was significantly associated with tumor lymph node metastasis and late clinical stage of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.Furthermore, the expression of CMIP was significantly correlated with patient poor relapse-free survival and overall survival in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma. Conclusion: CMIP might play an important role in the progression of laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma and increased expression of CMIP might imply disease progression and a poor outcome in patient with laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma.
