ObjectiveTo examine the distribution, volume and glucose-uptake activity of brown adipose tissue(BAT)in adults and to further investigate their correlations with metabolic markers. And To provide a new strategy for the prevention and treatment of metabolic diseases. Methods We analyzed the distribution, volume(ml)and glucose-uptake activity of BAT using positron emission tomography(PET)/CT;According to the development of brown fat or not on PET/CT images,it was divided into BAT positive group(121 cases)and BAT negative group(257 cases)and compared the clinical and metabolic markers(FBG,TG,TC,HDL-C,LDL-C,UA)differences between BAT positive group and BAT negative group. The influences of metabolic markers on the distribution, volume and activity of BAT were investigated.Logistic regression analysis,two-sample t test,?~2test and multiple linear regression were used to analyze the datas.Results(1)Analysis showed:(1)Among BAT positive group,The distribution, volume and glucose-uptake activity of BAT were found to be significantly higher in subjects being tested in colder seasons than those who were tested in warmer seasons[2.9%(87/2991)vs1.68%(34/2018)(p<0.01)?(433±402 vs 329±298)ml?(212±183 vs 169±145)g,(all P<0.05)respectively.(2)Regarding the gender of participants, the proportions of females were significantly higher in BAT positive group than in BAT negative group[68.6%(83/121)vs31.9%(82/257)],the difference has statistical significance(P<0.01).(3)Compared with the BAT negative group,The average levels of age, body mass index, fast blood glucose, triglyceride, total cholesterol, low density lipoprotein cholesterol and uric acid were significantly lower in BAT positive group,respectively(41.30±10.90 vs 48.70±9.60)years?(21.30±2.40 vs 24.50±3.10)Kg/m~2?(4.56±0.74 vs 5.34±1.33)mmol/L?(0.94±0.36 vs2.06±1.64)mmol/L?(4.42±0.79 vs 4.88±0.87)mmol/L?(1.99±0.58 vs 3.10±0.77)mmol/L?(285.11±70.00 vs 347.70±101.10)umol/L(all p<0.01);While the HDL-C levels of BAT-positive group also have a high trend than those of BAT-negative group, but the difference has no statistical significance(p>0.05).(2)logistic regression analysis revealed that season, gender, age,BMI,fast glucose, triglyceride, and LDL-C levels were all independent confounding factors of BAT distribution in adults(OR=5.36?2.06?0.95?0.79?0.49?0.23?0.02 respectively,p<0.001orp<0.05);while among BAT positive adults, gender and glucose levels were found to be strongly affected by the volume and glucose-uptake activity of BAT(?=0.28,-0.21 respectively,allp<0.05).Conclusions 1.The distribution, volume and glucose-uptake activity of BAT in adults showed negative correlations with multiple metabolic markers including levels of glucose, lipid and uric acid.2.The activation of BAT is affected by multiple factors such as sex, season, age,BMI,blood glucose, blood lipids.3.The increase in volume and glucose-uptake activity of BAT may improves glucose and lipidmetabolism. This may provide the potential therapy in the treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases.
