?Objective? The purpose of this study was to determine whether early local Iodophor Solution(Povidone-iodine,0.5%)soaked contaminated metal implants could effectively prevent implants infection.?Methods?48 Sprague-Dawley Rats were included in the study. The bacterial contamination models were that the implants(Titanium Kirschner)were placed in the right femur lateral intramuscular, immediately injecting 0.1ml,1.0×107CFU/ml Staphylococcus aureus(ATCC25923)around the implants. Then the total rats were randomly divided into cages,feeding.Sprague-Dawley Rats were randomly divided into Iodophor Solution groups and Normal Saline Solution groups independently at two,six hour time points.Rats in Iodophor Solution groups were applied with iodophor solution soaking for 10 minutes including soaking implants in vitro and soaking the soft tissue was contaminated around the implants, then debridement for the prophylaxis. After that, the implants were put back again and rats in Normal Saline Solution groups were given with equal normal saline solution soaking and debridement for the treatment. After 7 days, the results of these two groups were observed and compared, including general infection, the implanted infection rate, pathological tissue.?Results?(1)The general infection: Iodophor Solution group in the two hour point, there were ten Rats the incision healed well without fester and slough,Iodophor Solution group in the six hour point, only two Rats healed well;Normal Saline Solution group in the two hour point, there was only one Rat the incision healed well without fester and slough,Normal Saline Solution group in the six hour point, none healed well.(2)The implanted infection rate: in the two hour point, the infection rate of implant is 16.67% in the Iodophor Solution group(the infected:2;the uninfected:10),and 91.67% in the Normal Saline Solution group(the infected:11;the uninfected:1);then,in the six hour point, the infection rate of implant is 83.33% in the Iodophor Solution group(the infected:10;the uninfected:2),and 100% in the Normal Saline Solution group(the infected:10;the uninfected: 0).(3)The infection pathological tissues were significantly >10 neutrophils/HP.(4)There was a significantly lower infection rate in groups treated by iodophor solution soaking and debridement compared with those treated with equal normal saline solution(p<0.001)at two hour time point. However, there was not significantly reducing infection rate at six hour time points(p>0.05).?Conclusions?Early local iodophor solution soaks contaminated wounds and metal implants for 10 minutes within the 2 hours can significantly prevent infection, however, local iodophor solution soaking is not effective in preventing infection when the time of bacterial contamination ups to 6 hours.
