Historically, collapsing glomerulopathy(CG)was konwn as a variant of focal segmental glomerular sclerosis(FSGS)and was nearly always related to human immunodeficiency virus(HIV).However,CG has now been recognized in association with numerous other conditions, such as systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE).SLE-associated CG is a distinct clinicopathologic entity in patients with SLE who were not associated with HIV,parvovirus B19,hepatitis C virus, drugs or the other primary causes of CG,and is characterized by significant proteinuria, poor response to immunosuppressive therapy, and rapid progression to renal failure. In this article,we will review recent progress on SLE-associated CG.
