Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(COPD)is a common respiratory system disease, with high morbidity and mortality, frequently occurrence and progressive aggravation, seriously endangering the health of the elderly.Bacterial infection is a common cause of acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease(AECOPD),and the use of antimicrobial agents has an important role in the treatment of AECOPD patients. In recent years, procalcitonin(PCT)has become a biomarker of bacterial infection, and there are more and more researches on the application of PCT in AECOPD patients. Objective: This paper reviews the current researches on the application of PCT in the treatment of patients with AECOPD,so as to provide some references for clinicians to choose and use antibiotics better. Methods: To collect researches from CNKI and Pub Med database by computer, from database creation time to December 2016.Each database were searched both in Chinese and English.Chinese search terms are as follows: procalcitonin, acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,antibiotic,anti-bacteria;English search terms are as follows: Procalcitonin,PCT,acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease,AECOPD,antibiotic, antimicrobial, antibacteria.Result: There are lots of literature which explored the application of PCT in guiding the use of antibiotics in patients with AECOPD.These results show that using PCT to guide treatment can effectively reduce the use of antibiotics in patients with AECOPD,not increasing the mortality or treatment failure rate at the same time.In addition, the serum PCT level in patients with AECOPD contributes to the early diagnosis of bacterial infection,to predict the use of mechanical ventilation and to assess the severity and prognosis of the disease. Conclusion:Serum PCT level has certain guiding value for the use of antibiotics in patients with AECOPD.
