The detection and identification of biomedical signal and the processing of biological image are now deeply affected by the flourish of electronic information technology. Many traditional facilities or techniques in biomedicine are replaced by the new ones because of the electronic information technology, for example, the electron microscope is taking placing of the optical microscope and Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI)is substituted for Computed Tomography(CT).Additionally, once the rapid development of electronic communication, signal processing and microchip technology encounters with some difficult problems in biomedicine, new challenge of how can those new techniques be applied to the problems related to biomedicine arise. And the new challenge is the focus of this paper. As an important instrument, the cell analyzer can be used for the diagnosis of common diseases by classifying different cells, especially the red blood cells and white blood cells. The number and the morphology of blood cells of different kinds will change once the human body is infected, and those changes can be discovered and quantified by medical staff through cell analyzer at the early stage of diseases, which is essential to guarantee early treatment. However the existing cell analyzers are either exceeded in cost and size or too complicated to operate, which extremely shrinks their application. Therefore efficient tiny portable cell analyzers with reasonable cost are in great demand. The research related with the cell analyzer which can be used for cell detection, identification, classification and counting,is expanded from several aspects, such as cell contact imaging,ELM algorithm, microfluidic technique,Coulter principle and magnetic bead experiment. With two cell counting approaches proposed,a new cell analyzer is designed and its performance is analyzed and compared with the existing cell analyzers. Finally, the contact imaging based cell classification and counting system, along with the magnetic microbeads based cell sorting and counting system are accomplish with required precision, low cost and simple operation. The research results of this paper are of great reference value for the design of simple portable low cost cell analyzer.Additionally, the research method of this paper can be applied in a wide range of fields, such as the identification and counting of thecell-like objects and the detection of specially treated particles(environmental protection).
