Three-dimensional digital dental model is the foundation of computer-aided orthodontics system. In the process of computer-aided orthodontic treatment, the application of the three-dimensional digital dental model not only makes it possible to observe the data of orthodontic treatment recorded by the dental model any time, but also makes it easy for doctors to discuss and exchange opinions about the medical record, that provides information carrier for the long-distance online diagnose and orthodontics treatment This paper focuses on the research of how to establish a complete dental model based on dental crown data.First of all, this paper introduced the existing acquisition and storage methods of three-dimensional digital dental model in brief, and analyzed the strengths and weaknesses of these existing methods. In view of the strengths and weaknesses of the dental model methods,this paper proposed two establishing completed dental model methods based on dental crown data. One is the dental modeling method that based on three-dimensional model retrieval. This method utilizes three-dimensional retrieval technique to search dental models that bear similar dental crowns which need to be modeled. Modeling is completed through the rectification,clipping and splicing of the three-point translation and transformation method. In order to reduce the workload of the retrieval, this paper designed a tooth type identifying method based on region segmentation. While the region segmentation is implemented throuth the analyzing the characteristic differences between different types permanent tooth crowns, and describe the curve characteristic by Gaussian curvature and mean curvature. In accordance with the characteristics differences of different types of permanent tooth crown and the dental crown surface characteristics depicted by the segmented region, the type of dental crown is identified. After classification of teeth, the teeth were searched by different types. The other one is the dental modeling method that based on the characteristics of dental crown and root.This method utilizes the analysis of the dental measurement data and find out the association rules between dental crown data and root data. In accordance with these association rules anddental crown data that need to be modeled, the data of the dental root can be calculated accordingly. In the end, methods like spline curve and Laplace transformation are adopted to establish the dental model. It also needs using type identification to classify modeling.The above-mentioned algorithm is implemented through VS2010 and VTK programming. The algorithm efficiency and the modeling result are mainly compared and analyzed. The experiments confirm that the two kinds of modeling methods showed a good performance.
