Background and ObjectiveTo analyze the effectiveness and therapeutic significance of surgery on neonatal myelomeningoceleMethodsDatas of 63 cases of myelomeningocele who underwent surgery in the neonatal period in our medical center in the last decade were studied. Pre-and post-operative functions of bladder, and sphincter, and motor function were evaluated.Rate of shunt placement by 12 months and ambulation by 30 months were analyzed.Results(1)Bladder and sphincter dysfunction(preoperative 26,postoperative 6 improved),(2)Foot deformity(preoperative 14, postoperative 10 improved),lower limb paralysis(preoperative 13,postoperative 11 improved),(3) The rate of v-p shunt placement by the age of 12 months was 40%(21/52),(4) 33%(14/42)of these patients could walk independently by the age of 30 months.ConclusionsOperation in the neonatal period is helpful to their later functional improvement, but there are still mang children who are suffering from lower limb paralysis, bladder and sphincter dysfunction, foot deformity, etc, which greatly reduce their life quality.
