Objective: To investigate the expression of AKR1B10 in papillary thyroid carcinoma and the correlation between the expression levels and clinicopathological characteristicsMaterials and methods: Specimens and clinical data were obtained from patients with thyroid disease at the First People's Hospital of Chenzhou from January 2013 to July 2015. There were 117 cases of thyroid papillary carcinoma(PTC), 40 cases of nodular goiter, 40 cases of follicular adenoma of thyroid, 40 cases of Hashimoto thyroiditis and 13 cases of normal thyroid tissue. The expression levels of AKR1B10 were measured by immunohistochemistry. SPSS 18.0 statistical software was used to analyze the data. Results: 1. AKR1B10 were detected mainly in the cytoplasm and occasionally in the nucleus. The positive rates of AKR1B10 expression were higher in papillary thyroid carcinoma(88.0%) and hashimoto thyroiditis(82.5%) than that in nodular goiter(22.5%), thyroid follicular adenoma(32.5%),para-carcinoma tissue(28.6%)and normal thyroid tissue(38.5%).2. The expression levels of AKR1B10 were not significantly different between PTC and hashimoto thyroiditis(p>0.05). However, the difference of AKR1B10 expression between PTC and other four type of begin tissues was statistically significant(p<0.05).3. The levels of AKR1B10 expression in PTC were positively associated with tumor size and node metastasis(p<0.05) and negatively correlated with the level of serum TSH(p<0.05). However, the expression level of AKR1B10 in PTC was not correlated with gender, age, infiltration to adjacent tissue, site and TNM stage. Conclusion: AKR1B10 overexpression was positively correlated with tumor size, lymph node metastasis, but negatively correlated with the level of serum TSH. AKR1B10 might be involved in regulating the proliferation and migration of tumor cells. Therefore, AKR1B10 might become a novel biomarker for diagnosis of treatment of PTC.
