Objective:This study researches the characteristics of syndrome differential diagnosis thinking of traditional Chinese medicine(TCM) majors. Combining theory and experiments, it also explores TCM's cognition for “syndrome” and their effects on differential diagnosis thinking, and the cognitive representation modes of TCM syndrome.Method: 1) Literature review: conclude the cognition for “syndrome” and “symptom” and related concepts in TCM. Appling psychology theories analyzing the process of TCM's syndrome differential diagnosis thinking, TCM students' cognition of symptoms community, as well as exploring the influence of cognitive representation modes on TCM differential diagnosis thinking. 2) Experimental research: in research 1,self-made questionnaires, Questionnaire on TCM students' cognition on symptoms community, we use stratified sample, randomly sampling 233 students from seven-year TCM undergraduate of grade 2012 and TCM post-graduate students of grade 2015, and then collect data and analyze it in order to study the TCM students' cognition on symptoms community. Research 2 randomly samples 150 students from seven-year TCM undergraduate of grade 2012 and TCM post-graduate students of grade 2015 respectively, and categorise them according to their scores. And then issue the Questionnaire on the effects of different syndrome representative modes on TCM ' s differential diagnosis thinking, and collects data doing analysis on purpose of study the differential diagnosis thinking effects of different syndrome representative modes on TCM's differential diagnosis thinking.Results:1)On cognition on symptoms community, females score significantly score higher than males, and postgraduate student significantly perform better than undergraduate students. 2)On the effects of different syndrome representative modes on TCM's differential diagnosis thinking, undergraduate students show little difference in three modes while post-graduate students score highest in symptoms community representative mode. Meanwhile, there is little difference between post-graduate students and undergraduate students towards the etiological mode and the random mode. However, in symptoms community, post-graduate students scores significantly higher than undergraduate, and shows remarkably advantages in this area.Conclusion:1) Knowledge and experience have crucial influence on clinical diagnosis' accuracy, and the postgraduate students with the experience of clinical practice show a significantly higher accuracy than the undergraduate students without the experience of clinical practice in the case of similar syndrome differentiation and clinical syndrome differential diagnosis. The postgraduate students can carry on the deep processing of fine processing strategies for knowledge, and the knowledge can be memorised more solid and can be comprehended more deeply. 2)The symptoms community has a higher diagnosis directionality, which can induce and promote the application of heuristic-strategy thinking. The symptoms community thinking is beneficial for TCM students to systematically acquire and comprehend clinical syndrome differential diagnosis. Gaining and using symptoms community thinking skilfully have positive effects on the accuracy and effectiveness of clinical syndrome differential diagnosis effectively.
