Objective:Cardioembolic stroke and atherosclerotic stroke are the most common subtypes of ischemic cerebral stroke. We compared the differences of left atrial dia meters(LAD)and left atrial volume index(LAVI)between cardioembolic cerebral stroke and atherosclerotic cerebral stroke patients to explore the underlying relationship between them and subtypes.Method:51 patients with cardioembolic cerebral stroke and 272 patients with at herosclerotic cerebral stroke were involved in this study from March 2015 to October 2015 at 1st hospital of Dalian medical university. We took a record of the patients' characteristics such as age, height, weight, gender, smoking or not.Me anwhile whether the patients complicated with other diseases such as herpertensi on,diabete, coronary disease, atrial fibrillation(AF)was also included.LAVI was calculated by LA antero-posterior diameter(LAD),LA left-right diameter and LA upper-lower diameter at left ventricular end systole. The LAD and LAVI were evaluated in each group.According to the formula,LAVI was calculated and was classified in different increasing degrees to explore whether there was any difference between the cerebral stroke group and the atherosclerotic cerebral stroke group in general information, the left atrial diameter, left atrial volume index and the proportion of patients each group. Results: There were no significant differences regarding age, gender, hypertension, coronry disease, smoking and diabetes between this two groups(p>0.05).There is a significant difference of patients complicated with atrial fibrillation(P<0.001)and LVEF<50%(P=0.013)between Cardioembolic cerebral stroke group and ather osclerotic cerebral stroke group. The LAD in atherosclerotic cerebral stroke group is significantly lower than that in Cardioembolic cerebral stroke group(36.83±3.160 mm VS 38.18±5.224 mm P=0.023).At the same time, the LAVI in Cardioembol ic cerebral stroke group is much significantly higher than that in atherosclerotic cerebral stroke group(49.990±20.029ml/m2 VS 36.767± 8.648ml/m2 P<0.001).Conclusion:The percentage of patients complicated with AF and LVEF<50% is higher in Cardioembolic cerebral stroke than that in atherosclerotic cerebral stroke.Compared with atherosclerotic stroke, the Cardioembolic cerebral stroke patients' LAD and LAVI are much higher. The risk may be affected by the degrees of increased LAD values: the moderate increase of LAVI can lead a higher possibility of atherosclerotic stroke to occur;meanwhile the severely increased LAVI value is more likely to occur in Cardioembolic cerebral stroke.
